The ancient creator cult was a fertility cult. Priests of the 'first community'.

Men would come 'from the four corners carried by the wind' (migratory tribes) to mate with their women (nymphs, daughters of Gaia / earth).
They were technically people, not gods who lived in temples in high places to protect them from outsiders. They had an 'All-father' and 'All-mother' who were tribe leaders and teachers of younger folks. We think this happened to avoid inbreeding mutations and deformities.

You had to pass a 'test of worthiness'. You had to be physically health (not deformed or ill), kind and not ambitious (they didn't want criminals or troublemakers), skilled or intelligent (to teach them things?) to be granted entrance to sleep with the women.

You'd ascend and they'd return later a 'child' that looked like you, that became you only better (more educated) and this is how you 'attained immortality'. You uplifted yourself into an idea of a god….that lived forever through your own descendants. That these folks went out to gather technologies and skills and bring this back to gain their 'next life'. They spread the word of this cult to get others to come and bring gifts and technologies and worthy peoples into to the community.

The approach has its failings. If groups of problematic peoples had an awareness of where your community was and know you have resources you become a target for criminal intent for those who don't have resources and covet yours. If they "know" you aren't really gods you lack the ability to protect yourself from these peoples.
