It is not based on your skill, it's just like any other job you have to meat ride your senior or bosses in order to get good salary incriment, skills doesn't matter for example i use to help out seniors teach new workflows and help out with training other seniors one year above me cause i am some what passionate about cg related stuff and spend my little free time on it and and was getting paid same as the other guy who has never touched that specfic software and get the job because of someone mentioned him.
Skills matter if you have your own business.
