If I'm doing a B.S. in Computer Science, can you do a masters in Computer Engineering so as to lean more towards the hardware side of things? Not really trying to do another bachelors in Electrical Engineering, but don’t know if a Masters will prepare you well for the hardware aspect of things. If a Jack of all trades & master of none is true for CE, then a masters without the undergraduate foundations in EE might even be less preparation for CS background who wants to go more towards the EE side of things. I'm from California by the way. I live in California.

Computer Science to other Tech Degrees is like Mechanical Engineering to other Engineering Degrees.

Just like Mechanical Engineering can do Electrical, Chemical, Civil, Biomedical, Nuclear and other Engineering.

Computer Science can do Information Technology, Software Engineering, Networking, Cyber Security, Data Analytics and other Tech Jobs.

Me, laughing in having to take calculus and discrete math to get my Associate’s Degree in Software Dev: 🥲

  • @dyaonna

I still want to go for computer science

  • @dustins3147

I am in my last 2 classes for my associate and will be transferring to Sam Houston State for my bachelors in Software engineering. Cal 2, Discrete math are required. If you look up CS and SE there is only 6 or so out of 20 classes that are different. The core classes are the same. I keep hearing that SE degree doesn't need math. It all depends on the university.

Josh, could you make a video explaining what someone would need to self study in order to fill the gaps from the SWE degree?

  • @seanconor3372

I want to do the software degree, is it tough I did a python backend development and data structure bc it was tough but I liked it

  • @kennethb9772

PLEASE ANSWER. Is it possible to work as a programmer in or any similar position as an ex felon? I am trying to decide whether to shell out the money for school and really want to code but don’t want to spend the money if I am not going to be able to even get a position????

  • @tracy_cakkes

Can you do a video on the new changes they’ve made to the software development degree? They’re supposed to go into affect March 1st but they’re adding aws cloud practitioner cert, changing the name to software engineering, and adding micro classes to specialize in backend or frontend. Thoughts?

lol im trying to make the jump at 26 im stuck between comp sci and software engineering my main fear is math part but its awakening my inner child ive always been fascinated by the shit

  • @kirkshammett94

Ok I’m at a bit of a crossroads here. I keep hearing the computer science degree is the way to go. I have started trying to refresh on algebra, trigonometry, and pre-calculus but I’m having a very hard time with it. I suck at math. I have very much considered just going for a software development degree instead of the computer science, would it be worth it to take the extra time to learn the math or just go with software development?

  • @Dantprime

I greatly appreciate you for your advice and insight. I've been very on the fence about WGU and if it's worth going into vs a more "traditional" college. I've had some mixed reviews from folks and my own experience has been mixed with my enrollment process. I'm going to be meeting with my enrollment guy in a few and we'll see how it goes

  • @Liquid-Ben

Heya dude, I may aswell shoot into the breeze and ask a few questions. I'd like to say thanks to anybody taking the time to read this and I don't expect a response tbh but I'll ask regardless.. I'll prefix by saying, I don't even have PC yet but in a year or 2 I genuinely plan to be a software engineer. I'm not completely computer illiterate but I'm close, also I'm 30 and completey unqualified in terms of having an education. Anyways, about a decade ago I had a laptop and managed to partition it and put Linux on it, then life got in the way and I stopped using the PC, that's about as far as my experiences with computers goes. However If I put my mind to it I'm certain I'll be able a competent software engineer, as I have run a relatively successful small business in the UK for about 8 years now and rose to the challenge. Would you say it's a bad decision? I think I just need someone to tell me more, eg; is it stressful, do you get job satisfaction, are you happy with the pay and would you rather be working a different career? If anyone can answer these questions from an Internet stranger it would be greatly appreciated. 😉

  • @marcuslorenzo9705

Josh, thanks for your quality content. Wanted to ask if you happened to have a BSSD transfer-in spreadsheet? I've seen the one for CS, but just wanted to ask. Thanks!

  • @jared5049

Hey Josh. Do you have any tips on how to “pre game” study for the Software Development degree from WGU? I’ve been watching some vids from Programming With Mosh, and other things on YouTube. Any tips on how to get some more familiarity with the topic before I jump in? I’m pretty new to the topic as a whole. Thanks!

  • @UltimateGamerLPS

Hey Josh, I was wondering what frontend and backend languages have you learned and used at your development job? I know Python is one of them.

  • @OhJellow

You have no idea how much these shorts motivate me while going after the cs degree <3

  • @irSteven

Wow, I had no idea SWE did not go as deep in to the math requirements as CS. That is good to know.

  • @blackswan7568

Great question. I'll be taking calculus at my community college this year, so I'll have the freedom to go for either one😁

  • @bl3745

Hello, what are your thoughts on an WGU MBA IT management degree for someone that is close to finishing a WGU MS cyber degree and currently landed a security program manager role? Interested in your thoughts if it would be a good investment. Thanks
